How can I change it so new Finder windows open to my desktop?

Answer:
From your Finder go to Finder > Preferences (or Command-Comma). Click on the General tab and look for "New Finder windows show:". Click on the dropdown menu and then select whichever folder you want like your Finder windows to open to.
